John McGlinchey, a young Irish transplant from County Donegal finds little opportunity in South Philadelphia during Reconstruction era America. His war time savings nearly depleted, he is determined to find work and joins hundreds of his countrymen in one of the greatest engineering quests of the time, building the Trans-Continental Railroad. McGlinchey provides a first person narrative of the events he encounters that overturn many of his contemporary views of race and religion while at the same time providing an unvarnished view of people great and small that shaped this grand endeavor.

Irish Gandy Dancer A tale of building the Transcontinental Railroad eBook Ryan Collins Reviews

A very enjoyable account of the young Irishman, John McGlinchey. He personally takes you along with him and shares his life as he helps to build the Transcontinental Railroad from Nebraska to Utah. Filled with bits of interesting history of not only the railroad, but the different states, the towns that sprang up to follow the railroad as it moved westward, as well as the people, both good and bad, encountered along the way. The book also includes some outstanding historical pictures. Would be a wonderful book to get middle to high schoolers interested in history. Would also be a good summer reading project. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it left me with a wanting to discover more. Irish Gandy Dancer A tale of building the Transcontinental Railroad
Riveting personal account of one man's epic journey throughout the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Warm, touching, educational...a must read for students of American history, both young and old. An action-adventure lifted from the private journal of the author's own great-grandfather, Irish Gandy Dancer will not disappoint!
I could not put this book down! This is a fascinating account of life during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. It was action packed and very insightful, as it expressed the feelings and attitudes of the 1860s through the eyes of an Irish immigrant. As a school librarian, I would recommend this book for all high school libraries and anyone who loves to read about American history!
Loved the book, only bad part it was over in 2 days of reading. Didn't describe tons of details to fill the page. I will have to look for this author and see if he's written anything else. It was written and you felt you were there. Great Story
